NUR 530 – Nursing Leadership & Management in a
Dynamic Healthcare Environment
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Examines contemporary leadership and management concepts and theories relevant to a variety
of health care delivery settings. Explores the unique leadership and management challenges that
nurse executives face in today’s dynamic and complex healthcare environment. Equips learners
with the necessary skills to serve as change agents: collaborating effectively with stakeholders
and constituencies, determining priorities within health care organizations, leading initiatives and
innovations in health care organizations, and integrating technology that support the achievement
of organizational and patient care outcomes. Various nursing care delivery models and staffing
are analyzed. Learners evaluate the effects of pertinent laws and policies on health care delivery
and nursing practice and demonstrate cultural and ethical behaviors that are essential to the nurse
leadership role. Learners will have the opportunity to apply this knowledge in a practice setting.

Apply each step of the strategic planning process to impact individual and team
accountability within an organization.
Explore the nurse leader’s role in developing, promoting, and advocating for effective
staffing plans.
Determine best practices for building effective, collaborative leadership teams to achieve
organizational goals and objectives.
Identify strategies that foster an environment of leadership innovation and execution of
evidence-based process improvement changes in healthcare environments.
Discuss recent healthcare industry policy changes and their impact on healthcare delivery.
Analyze the leader's responsibility to implement effective organizational structure for high
performance, considering internal and external stakeholders.
Discuss the components of strategic communication with internal and external stakeholders,
and its impact on interdisciplinary collaboration.
Discuss the importance of recognizing and recovering from failures and error; and
transforming a punitive culture to one focused on quality and safety.
Write clearly and concisely about healthcare priorities, leading organizational planning,
collaboration, and implementing healthcare policy, using proper writing mechanics.

Courses within the MSN Program may include clinical experiences (experiential learning),
which are required for successful course completion. Clinical experiences (experiential learning)
enable students to apply new knowledge gleaned from Master’s Level coursework. Students
engaged in these experiential learning opportunities will participate in indirect care experiences
that focus on application of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Master’s
Essentials, the Graduate Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Competencies, and/or
the American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) Competencies. These experiences will
be offered in an actual or simulated practice setting and will involve engaging students in
completing assignments that are of an experiential nature, to enhance their knowledge and
application of leadership and management concepts, principles, skills, and competencies.
In order to successfully complete this course, you will be required to complete 24 hours of
preceptorship with a nurse leader. The requirement will include you spending a total of
three 8-hour days with a preceptor. This requirement is in place to optimize your
preceptor experience and allow you to follow the nurse leader during his/her entire shift.
Begin identifying your chosen organization and the nurse leaders you intend to utilize in
facilitating your preceptorship experience.
Students enrolled in this course must achieve a “Satisfactory” grade in Sentinel City
simulation to receive a “Satisfactory” Clinical Experiential Learning grade.
