Req: HUM 303; MAT 304)
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Builds on previous knowledge of technology use in healthcare settings and facilitates development of
connections among concepts related to research, evidence-based practice, and healthcare informatics
and how they interface to impact healthcare delivery. Emphasis is placed on the concepts and issues
involved with technology use in today’s rapidly changing healthcare environment. It explores how
technology and informatics are designed to enhance individual and population health outcomes,
improve patient care delivery, and strengthen the nurse-patient relationship.

Assignment 1: Nursing Informatics Job Description and Organizational Chart
Due Week 2 and worth 100 points
For this assignment, you will need to refer to your Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of
Practice book and the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) to develop a job description for
a Nurse Informaticist. You will also need to develop an organizational chart showing who the Nurse
Informaticist will report to and who will report to the Nurse Informaticist.
Write a two to four (2-4) page paper in which you:
1. Create a job description which includes the following:
- Job title
- Department
- Salary
- Primary roles and responsibilities
- Qualifications and education requirements
- Preferred skills
2. Create an organizational chart which includes the following:
- Reporting structure (above and below if applicable)
- Identify direct/indirect relationships
Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:
• Use Microsoft Word for both deliverables. Utilize Smart Art in your organizational chart.
• Be typed, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; include
at least two (2) scholarly references. Citations and references must follow APA format. Check
with your professor for any additional instructions.
• You will not need to attach a title page.
The specific course learning outcome(s) associated with this assignment are:
• Examine the use of informatics in nursing research and evidence-based practice.
• Delineate the ethical and legal responsibilities of the nurse in relation to information systems,
including privacy, confidentiality, and security.
Grading for this assignment will be based on the following rubric.

Assignment 2: Evidence-Based Practice Case Study – Developing an Excel Spreadsheet
Due Week 5 and worth 125 points
(Case Study for BOTH assignments 2 & 3)
You work on a busy medical unit. Your patient population is very diverse, ranging from patients who
are transferred from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) while recovering from a critical illness to those are
who are admitted for a medical condition from a Long-Term Care Facility (LTC). Over the past 3
months there has been an increase in the number and severity of Pressure Injuries (PI). Your quality
improvement council discusses ways in which education could be helpful to review best practices for
the prevention and treatment of PIs. Both traditional classroom and online learning options are
suggested with little agreement as to which would work best in the long-term.
The council agrees to conduct a study comparing learning outcomes about PIs from both educational
approaches. Educational classes are prepared and delivered using both classroom and online
educational formats. Thirty registered nurse employees from the unit are divided into two groups, with
half being randomly assigned to receive education about PIs in the classroom environment and the
other half being assigned to receive education about PIs in an online environment. Following the
education interventions using both strategies, the nurses are required to take an identical quiz with
broad areas of: assessment, protocol, and prevention. The scores from the quizzes will help to guide
ongoing educational efforts in PI.
As a newly prepared BSN nurse, you are asked to help prepare the report from the findings of the
study. a The problem statement, study questions, and methodologies are already completed. You are to
help with the literature review, Excel Spreadsheet data entry, and interpretation. You are to summarize
the study and literature findings and briefly identify a conclusion or recommendation regarding a
proposed educational intervention.
Your involvement for the Excel Spreadsheet portion includes:
1) Completing an Excel Spreadsheet with the calculations of the study;
2) Creating a graph comparing the two types of approaches on learning outcomes;
3) Drawing conclusions from the study findings. a
THESE ARE THE DELIVERABLES FOR ASSIGNMENT 2
Directions: Assignment 2. A partially completed Excel template will be provided (Template).
Additionally, data elements for completing the Excel Spreadsheet will be provided (Data Elements). A
prototype is provided for your reference:
1. You will be asked to complete the Excel Spreadsheet with the provided data elements and to
do aggregates (summaries) for at least two of the following data reports:
a) Comparison of total of knowledge scores per education intervention type for Classroom vs.
Online
b) Comparison of knowledge scores of Assessment factors for Classroom vs. Online
c) Comparison of knowledge scores of Prevention factors for Classroom vs. Online
d) Comparison of knowledge scores of Intervention protocol factors for Classroom vs. Online
2. Create at least one graphic to reflect a pertinent finding (a pie chart will fit this data well) using
percentages and proper labels.
3. Write an interpretive statement (not just a summary) of what the data might mean for using one
type of educational intervention over another for nursing care.

the literature review of the report. You can use search terms like, “comparison of online
education versus classroom learning” or you can find studies that relate to Pressure Injuries
patients. You may be able to find articles that address both. Your articles should be original
research articles or can be summaries of articles by reputable organizations such as AHRQ or
National Council for the State Board of Nursing.
2. Write at least two paragraphs summarizing the findings of your two articles using proper APA
formatting
3. Edit and correct the APA formatting on the already developed literature review paragraph and
