NUR 300 – Transition to Baccalaureate Nursing Practice
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Equips students for the transition to the role of the baccalaureate-prepared registered nurse (RN).
Students examine how nursing and non-nursing theories, professional organizations, standards, and
guidelines are applied to nursing practice to improve healthcare delivery. Introduces students to the
program’s mission and philosophy and to the key concepts in the RN to BSN Program curriculum,
including: caring, professionalism, evidence-based practice, and collaboration. Students begin
development of an ePortfolio, which will be used throughout the program to describe their professional
practice, growth, and achievement of the program learning outcomes.

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. Describe the purpose and use of the Baccalaureate Essentials in professional nursing practice
and how they relate to the nursing program outcomes.
2. Compare elements of various nursing theories.
3. Critically analyze nursing and non-nursing theories for their application to clinical scenarios to
enhance clinical reasoning and decision making.
4. Evaluate the role of nursing theory in patient-centered care.
5. Initiate development of a professional portfolio that incorporates elements of the Baccalaureate
Essentials, relevant theories, and coursework exemplars to demonstrate the transition into the
role of the professional baccalaureate nurse.
6. Discuss the role of nursing and non-nursing standards and guidelines in enhancing patient-
centered care.
7. Evaluate the role of professional nursing and non-nursing organizations in enhancing professional
nursing practice.
8. Analyze professional nursing philosophies and articulate a personal nursing philosophy, in
alignment with professional nursing values.
9. Develop a professional development plan.
10. Communicate effectively in writing.

WEEKLY COURSE SCHEDULE
The standard requirement for a 4.5 credit hour course is for students to spend 13.5 hours in weekly work.
This includes preparation, activities, and evaluation regardless of delivery mode.
