Virtual Private Networks (VPN) are a type of computerized network system that
connects employees or venders that are working remote to their employers network
by using the internet. In this time of COVID, VPN’s provides the ability for companies
to conduct reliable business even when non-essential employees are forced to stay
home. In many circumstances, using VPN’s networks have saved companies the
cost of electricity and other physical infrastructure expenses by not having the
employee show up for work in physical building. Using VPN’s might sound like a
wonderful tool for all employers to implement but it also does have down side.

The problem is that this type of technology was not designed for venders or other
non-employees to access. Virtual Private Networks are wonderful for current
employees to provide wide access to the corporate network but fail to recognize
users with unauthorized access. VPN’s were only design to connect two different
networks together by using encryption but this type of connection cannot tell the
difference between privileges and thus venders might have the same access to the
entire network as a full time employee. VPN also cannot provide fine audit details.
Audit trails from VPN’s can only tell about the connected networks and the time
logged in but not what the user is doing. Another risk of hacking into the corporate
network from VPN’s comes from the venders or the employee WIFI service. Home or
