Stream ciphers convert one symbol of plaintext directly into a symbol of
ciphertext. The advantages of a Steam cipher include Speed of
transformation: algorithms are linear in time and constant in space. Low
error propagation: an error in encrypting one symbol likely will not affect
subsequent symbols. Stream is good for if you have continuous data that
you want to encrypt.
Block ciphers encrypt a group of plaintext symbols as one block. The
advantages of a Block cipher are High diffusion: information from one
plaintext symbol is diffused into several ciphertext symbols. Immunity to
tampering: difficult to insert symbols without detection. Block is good to
use if you are working with data
Character ciphers is one of the basic and first ciphers. This usually
includes taking one character and then replace it with another. This is
known as Caesar Cipher.& Character is good to use if you want to use
simple decoding.
