In order to distinguish between a character, block, and stream cipher, I
will need to understand what a cipher actually is and why it's used.
According to Ajay Ohri from JigsawAcademy.com, a cipher is "a method in
which a message is transformed to conceal its real meaning." (1) It's an
algorithm used to encode and decode data or information. It takes the
original data from plaintext and changes it around into a ciphertext that
may appear irregular. Ciphers depend on a secret key and algorithm, the
longer the key, the more effective. (2)
A character cipher uses characters or letters and replaces them with a
different character. This cipher is easy to create, which also makes it
easier to decode.)
Block cipher is encryption that allows a key to encode a block or group of
text. )It's one of the most popular forms used today.)
Stream ciphers are more difficult to decode. It uses byte by byte and is
not readable without the key. It's used often and is relied on its speed and
ability to transmit data.
JigsawAcademy.com mentions using symmetric cryptography uses the
same key to encrypt and decrypt while asymmetric cryptography can use
private and or public keys while encrypting and decrypting information.
