The concept of single sign-on (SSO) is based upon the stress that staff face in their day-to-
day work. Predominantly a user logs into an account so if you decide to log into another
system, server, or network you are required to log into those services all over again. This
simple and easy to say explanation creates a lot of work stress in different places. A student
by the name of Tim Howes and his associates at the University of Michigan took this
opportunity to design the SSO to connect users to systems throughout the university in 1993.
This authentication process was then linked to other systems in the network allowing staff to
use them without memorizing their login credentials for each system. The system was built in
such a way that once you log into a network, your credentials are automatically transmitted to
a server that validates the information and grand you access or denied access.
