Basic Network Topologies
A point-to-point topology is one of the simplest and easiest networks that consists of a
direct link between one node or computer and another. The network offers a dedicated
communication between the two nodes. In a star topology, all nodes or computers are
connected to a central hub (Williams). The objective of the central hub is to send and receive
data between the computers. In a bus topology, a half-duplex link, the bus, connects all the
computers on the network. The priority of transmission is equal for each station on the
network. In a ring network, a continuous ring-like pathway is formed when every computer in
the network is connected to two other computers or nodes (Tutorials Point). In a mesh
network, the topology’s connections between the nodes and computers have occur
dynamically and in a non-hierarchical manner. Each node or computer connects to as many
