6-1 Discussion: Social Sciences in the Real World
An issue that affects my community as well as many communities across the world is crime. Having
knowledge of the social sciences can affect how I and others understand why crime occurs as well as
how it can be prevented. According to studies on inequality and poverty, for instance, have
demonstrated that such factors may contribute to crime. Once we become aware of this, we may take
action in reducing inequality and poverty, and thus reduce the amount of crime. Additionally, we can
understand other potential underlying causes of crime and develop effective solutions with the
