SCS 100 5-2 Discussion The past and Present of the Social Sciences
No neanderthal fossils older than 40 years were found after the invention of technology in 1952
and the first usage of the name in 1829. Why did you forget? Psychodynamics: Who we are as
adults was decided when we were little, so perhaps there was conflict or a wish to avoid (Freud).
Because of everything we went through as infants, we are who we are today. Unconscious
factors influence conduct Biology, the endocrine system, the immunological system,
neurotransmitters' function in illnesses, and physiological processes that influence behavior are
all covered within the field of neuroscience. Humanistic: free will; ability to choose our course in
life; belief in the inherent goodness of each person; ability to develop and realize one's full
potential; control over one's own life; different from other theories in that it does not presuppose
that we are motivated by unconscious or psychoanalytical forces but are instead torn apart by our
own decisions.
Cognitive: automatic and control processes, intuition performs with ease, mechanisms of thought
and thought qualities, automatic processes are conservative and cannot be useful in a world that
is changing quickly. Regulated processes tend to oversimplify reality and have a limited
capability. From a behaviorally objective perspective, we cannot know what is happening, but we
can watch how the environment reacts and what triggers it, as well as manage the triggers and
the results of our actions. How a living thing responds to its surroundings and stimuli is very
idiosyncratic. 1925 established Menninger Clinic In Topeka, Kansas, Charles Frederick
Menninger founded The Menninger Clinic along with his sons Karl Augustus and William Clair.
They emphasize both psychological and psychiatry fields in their compassionate approach to
treating mental disease. 1938 Beginning with Italian neuropathologist and psychiatrist,
electroconvulsive therapy Ugo Cerletti and his colleagues use electrical shock therapy on human
patients to treat schizophrenia and psychosis. Even though it is debatable, ECT is still used today
and has been shown to be helpful in some situations.
Two dates stood out to me when I read the history of psychology timeline and the various
viewpoints: the year 1925, when Charles F. Menninger established the Menninger Clinic to treat
mental illness with a more sympathetic approach, and the year 1938, when Ugo Cerletti began
using electroconvulsive therapy on patients who were mentally ill (ECT). It's fascinating that the
concept of compassionate care for mentally sick people emerged 45 years after the establishment
of the first psychology lab in 1879; from what I understand of this era, the concept of mental
illness was alien and misunderstood at the time. The Menninger Clinic was founded in 1925 with
the intention of taking a more sympathetic approach to mental health, therefore I thought it was
intriguing that ECT started 13 years later.
I think a key component that has affected how psychology and social science are studied and
understood is the founding of the Menninger Clinic in 1925 and the idea that mental illness
should be treated with empathy and compassion. I believe that in the early days of psychology,
the concept of mental disease was still alien, incomprehensible, and inappropriate. This
perspective on mental disease, in my opinion, had a significant influence on the societal social
stigma and general acceptance of psychiatric problems. The idea that depressed people required
assistance and might be researched rather than be rejected by civilization and a drain on its
resources fostered the people with psychological therapy.
