2-6 Project Part One: Formulate Research Question
My issue:
I have selected genetic engineering as the topic of my discussion. Genetic engineering entails
intentionally altering an organism's characteristics by manipulating its genetic material.
Scientists have utilized genetic engineering to create cancer therapies, brew yeast, and
genetically modified plants and livestock (GMOs). People often misunderstand genetic
engineering and unfairly associate it with concerns about genetically modified babies. However,
it has truly revolutionized the medical field. Gene therapy is classified as genetic engineering.
Through gene therapy, the field of medicine has discovered a remarkable method to address
genetic abnormalities and potentially eliminate or treat genetic disorders. Having witnessed the
loss of several family members to various types of cancer, this subject immediately grabbed my
attention. Being aware of a potential solution to assist my father, who is currently battling cancer,
and my child, that may also carry the cancer gene, is a compelling reason for me to delve into
this subject.
Research Question:
1. How can genetic engineering be used to combat genetic diseases? What are the
ethical considerations?
I have a couple of other questions as I am not sure which one to use.
1. What is the role of genetic engineering in the development of personalized
medicine?
