Triple bottom line (TBL) is an important business concept. TBL refers to the joint
assessment of social, environmental, as well as economic sustainability that forms the very
basis for efficient use of resources and sustainability (Breesam & Jawad, 2021).
A. Key Components
The three key components of the triple bottom line are people, planet, and profit.
People refer to all the important stakeholders of an organization. It includes management,
employees, individuals involved in the supply chain, customers, and the community within
which the business operates. The people component of the triple bottom line also includes the
family members of the employees as well as all other people who have an interest in the
business or are affected in some way or the other by the operations of the business (Atu,
2013).
The second component of the triple bottom line is the planet. It includes the planet
Earth and the natural environment that exists within it. It focuses on promoting the use of
natural resources, avoiding toxic materials, and reducing the carbon footprint on the earth. It
also includes restoration and effective removal as well as disposal of wastes. The third
component of the triple bottom line is profit. Profit clearly includes the money that is
important for any business to achieve success. It includes paying taxes, creating employment,
wealth creation, and other economic impacts of an organization.
