In 2009 two computer programmers, Brian Acton and Jan Koum
wanted to create a company that would allow accessible messaging
across the world. This popular messaging app created value for itself
by outsourcing its app development to Russia. This was at the
beginning of the company’s timeline. The founders had a lack of funds
and people on their team, so they wanted to put more focus on other
aspects of their app development such as customer service. Paying
experienced app developers in Russia to work on the technical side of
the application saved the founders' high startup costs and allowed
them to utilize intellect that they did not have themselves. This
created value for WhatsApp and its customers because the Russian
app developers had more knowledge to create an app that stood out
against the competition and would make a profit and Acton and
Koum could focus on providing customer service which would benefit
the customer. a
