Part One: Analyzing the Socio-Psychological Foundations of Conformity
Analyze the socio-psychological factors that influence our tendency to conform to group pressure. In
your analysis, address each of the following rubric criteria in 3 to 5 sentences:
1. Describe the difference between acceptance, compliance, and obedience, and provide
examples of how these concepts present within the group dynamic.
Acceptance, compliance and obedience are similar yet different in nature. Acceptance and
compliance are two variations of conformity where obedience is doing something because it is
required (Myers, 2021-10-12). For example, seatbelts in vehicles. Acceptance is when you
believe in something, so you accepting that seatbelts save lives. Compliance would be following
that we need to wear them whereas, if we didn’t think they saved lives yet, we wore them
because the law said so, we are in obedience.
2. Describe the difference between normative influence and informational influence and provide
examples of how these concepts impact the group dynamic.
Normative and informational influences are two possibilities that explain why individuals may
conform to a certain way. These were named by Mortaon Deutsch and Harold Gerard in 1955
(Myers, 2021). One comes from our desire to be liked the other is our desire to be right.
Normative is “going along with something” to gain approval or not be rejected from the group
or individual. An example would be cheering for a football team because everyone else is, when
in fact, you are rooting for the other team. Informational is referring to data or other
information used to make a decision that one feels is trustworthy. A person will base their
beliefs on this information. Example of informational influence would be medication given to
you by your physician. You take it and trust the physician because you feel he knows what is
best.
3. Describe why cognitive dissonance is not always easy to recognize in ourselves.
Cognitive dissonance is that internally nagging feeling we get, that gut feeling, when something
isn’t right. Because it’s internal, we don’t always recognize what it is or how to change it.
(Cherry, 2025). We need and want consistency in our thought patten so we can show some
mood changes when it’s not. It’s hard to recognize because it may not had formed just yet
therefore hard to determine or we justify our behavior (Myers, 2021)
4. Describe ways to reduce cognitive dissonance and shift to a state of cognitive consonance in the
group setting.
To reduce cognitive dissonance and promote cognitive consonance in a group setting, you start
with yourself. Educating yourself and learning new information can help with discerning the
difference in what we hear for it not to be deciding our actions. If we’re able to recognize how
the group will affect us cognitively, it will help with the actions that are less undesirable. By
doing so we can take responsibility for our actions and part in the group.
1
5. Describe the factors that may impact a person’s ability or desire to deviate from the norm and
choose not to conform to group pressure.
There are several factors that will influence someone’s ability to deviate from the norm are
resist group pressure. Our individual personality with strong self-esteem can and usually is the
cause of us resisting conformity. If we posses’ skills such as being independent, open-minded
and are willing to discuss different opinions, we can empower others to stand apart from the
group. Others could be our beliefs and values, cultural, and previous experiences. If we take
into consideration all of the factors, it can help provide some inside into the complexity of social
behavior between someone’s individual choices and the group influences.
Part Two: Reflecting On the Conformity Experience
Reflect upon an authentic experience that occurred either at home, in school, at work, or within the
greater community, in which you or someone you know conformed to the majority opinion. In your
reflection, address each of the following rubric criteria in 3 to 5 sentences:
1. Describe the influence of unanimity on the tendency of group members to conform to the
majority opinion.
People usually are not fond of social rejection; therefore, they are more likely to conform to not
be left out. Myers (2021) states, “several experiments reveal that someone who punctures a
group’s unanimity deflates its social power.” Unanimity can create a powerful environment that
fosters conformity, but it usually at the cost of the person’s individual opinions.
2. Describe the influence of cohesion on the tendency of group members to conform to the
majority opinion.
When a group has a high cohesion, the individuals are more willing to accept each other. It is the
bond that connects each person in a group to create that sense of unity and acceptance. When
a group works together it also allows for individuals to share their characteristics that may be
like others.
3. Describe the influence of status on the tendency of group members to conform to the majority
opinion.
Influences of status can and usually has a significant influence. Persons with higher roles such as
someone in a leadership role, someone with more experience and so forth, may have more
influence over the group. But also, someone with a lower status may feel some pressure to fit in
with the group as to not be left out. Statuses can be used to determine a person’s self-worth so
it can definitely impact the group.
Part Three: Integrating the Negative and Positive Aspects of Conformity Within the Group Dynamic
Integrate and apply your knowledge of conformity, which can result in both negative and positive
outcomes on group collaboration. In your response, address each of the following rubric criteria in one
paragraph:
1. Describe the negative effects of conformity on group collaboration. Include the potential impact
of conformity on each of the following:
2
A. The motivation of group members
B. The identity and individuality of group members
C. The perceptions of fairness toward group members
D. The creativity and diversity of ideas of group members
Within a group setting, there could be several effects of conformity. This negativity can
weigh heavenly on motivation, identity, perception of fairness and creativity. When an
individual is feeling any pressure to fit in, they may change who they truly are. By
suppressing their uniqueness, it can lower their motivation. At times conformity will
require a person to prioritize group consensus over their own personal values and
beliefs, which usually will cause the person to lose their own identity or our own self-
perception. Those that have a stronger personality may dominate with their opinions,
and this can cause other group members to feel any decisions are unfair or biased.
Judgements will mesh with the rest of the group so as not feeling rejected. Creativity and
diversity of ideas can be lost or discouraged in a group setting because some may feel
hesitant to share their ideas feeling they will be rejected; however, the loss can cause
the group to miss out on a new solution even if it may seem unconventional.
2. Describe the positive effects of conformity on group collaboration. Include the potential impact
of conformity on each of the following:
A. The cohesiveness of group members
B. The intergroup harmony between group members
C. The productivity level of group members
D. The learning amongst group members
Cohesiveness intensifies a group with their efforts which will increase their harmony,
productivity and learning ability. With a cohesive group. they are willing to share ideas, their
experiences and knowledge, therefore, creating a stronger bond. This helps the group be in a
more positive atmosphere that will enable a learning experience. Harmony keeps the group on
the same page, helping reduce misunderstandings. The group learns to trust each other. When a
group is given a challenge and they are rewarded, there is a spirit of group commitment that is
established for their work (Myers, 2021). Conformity will also have those in the group take
responsibility and accountability to making sure that their objective as a group is completed.
When everyone is relaxed and working as a group, it paves the way for learning. Each person in
the group can share their ideas and thoughts that will help to increase the knowledge that is
being introduced.
3. Using the various socio-psychological concepts examined in this project to support your
position, share three recommendations for optimizing the group collaboration experience.
When I think about the various concepts, I have a few that I would recommend optimizing the
group experience. By establishing clear roles along with the responsibility that comes with it, it
will help minimize any confusion and each person of the group understands what role they play.
This allows clarity and can reduce any future conflict from happening. Second, I recommend
creating a safe and inclusive environment so anyone can feel valued and recognized. We want
that relationship and can achieve it with team building exercises. By making everyone feel
3
welcomed, it opens communications between everyone. Lastly, Being open to feedback and
constructive criticism. Many people may feel insecure when they are told something, even to
the point of feeling some resentment. By having the lines of communication open and be willing
to accept feedback as a positive way of growth, it allows positive problem-solving, drives
innovations and improves discussions amongst the entire team.
