this week!
The model I have chosen is Kaplan’s Triphasic Model. I believe this is the most important
because it focuses a lot of the research and information on the cognitive component rather than
just the physiological component. Masters and Johnson had a great 4 stage model that really
described the physiological side of sex, but Kaplan proved that the psychological side can be just
as important, and she introduced us to the 3 stages of the Triphasic Model. Her 3 stages are
desire, arousal, and orgasm, adding desire to be the cognitive part of this model. She went on to
explain desire can happen one of two ways – spontaneous desire which means the desire will
ultimately lead to sex or responsive desire where excitement happens first and then the
component of desire happens. Kaplan was a psychologist and a psychiatrist, so she was able to
look at sexual response models from two different lenses, which in turn helped her to become
one of the biggest contributors to learning and treating sexual dysfunctions. Understanding sex
from this point of view gives both scientific and psychological data to back it, and this is why I
think sharing this model would give the most information to anyone not understanding of
human sexuality.
