2-1 Discussion: The Role of Inclusion
I believe that inclusive education is essential especially in today's society as it helps children with
disabilities and disorders increase their communication and social skills. From my personal experience,
my high school had a whole wing devoted for special education which for the most part kept those
students restricted from interacting with the general education students. There were only a few of those
students who I remember having limited interaction with the rest of the students. At the time, I did not
really think anything about it because I was young and maybe felt that it was appropriate for the
students to be in a self-contained, restrictive environment. I believe this was due to the negative stigmas
that society had placed on people with disabilities and disorders and my developing of biases and
stereotypes when it comes to them. As I have gotten older and have experience in the classroom
working with children with a variety of disorders such as Autism, Down’s Syndrome, and Asperger's
Syndrome (to name a few), I can see in retrospect how having those with in my high school in such a
restrictive environment may have restricted those individuals in their ability to gain the social and
communication skills needed to function in today's society. I am not saying that what my high school
