Recognizing Diversity
When it comes to educational environments, students from various diverse backgrounds
can potentially be faced with a variety of issues caused by contributing factors such as linguistic,
cultural, and socio-economic differences between students. Differences in culture and
socioeconomic status can contribute to difficulties for the students due to peer bullying and life
experiences while if correct interpretation is not provided for the students, linguistic disparities
may make learning extremely challenging (Kaptingei, 2016).
There are numerous factors that may contribute to the issue of an increasing
overrepresentation of students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in special
education programs including insufficient education instruction and professional development
for those working with children of diverse backgrounds, biases, and poverty (Kreskow, 2013).
