Thinking about one's own observations, ideas, feelings, motivations, and acts as well as those of
others, groups, and even entire social systems is known as social intelligence. The divergent
thinking job evaluates the knowledge that people can have erroneous beliefs, and that even faulty
beliefs can affect action. • EX: A youngster is watching Sally and Anne. As Anne enters the
room, Sally has already moved the marbles out of the box she had put them in. Where will Sally
seek for the pebbles when she returns to the room? Behavioral theory is the view that (a) persons
have mental states including intents, beliefs, and wants and (b) these mental states direct (and
contribute to the explanation of) their behavior.
The social brain A theory of mind starts to develop in utero. early stages of theory of mind
development • Concurrent focus. Infants and the adults who are caring for them participate in
shared attention, simultaneously focusing on the same item. • Recognizing intents Infants appear
to be aware of the intents, objectives, and actions of others. • Making up games. Infants play
their first modest pretend game between the ages of one and two, demonstrating their ability to
discern between pretend and reality (a kind of false belief)
