PSY 211 Module One Milestone
In the Module One Milestone Guidelines and Rubric, review the Overview and Prompt sections. Then
answer each of the following questions with a minimum of 3 to 5 sentences. Support your answers with
credible sources when appropriate. Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the
relevant information.
●Compare the psychological factors that have influenced both April’s and Judi’s development.
oConsider their cognitive and affective factors in your response.
Although April and Judi are identical twins, they were separated at birth and raised in separate
households. April was raised in a warm, loving environment where she was able to be herself.
Her cognitive factors thrived because of those things and she was able to successfully graduate
highschool and eventually have a successful law career. Her affective factors include her being
able to have high self-confidence and she was also able to maintain healthy relationships both
personal and professional.
Judi “was raised in an emotionally chaotic environment; her father was an angry, abusive
alcoholic, while her mother was anxious, depressed, and emotionally codependent” (SNHU,
n.d.). Judi just almost missed the requirements to graduate highschool and has been
unsuccessful in getting sufficient employment. Because of the environment that Judi was
raised in, she was in abusive situations with significant others and had very few friends.
Cognitive factors she developed because of the psychological factors in her life were severe
depression and anxiety. Lack of affection and support in her life led to horrible relationships
and a helpless outlook on life.
●Compare the social factors that have influenced both April’s and Judi’s development.
oConsider their relational and environmental factors in your response.
April was raised in a very loving environment with parents who were extremely supportive throughout
her life. “April has always maintained productive, healthy relationships with those in her personal and
professional circles—social bonds that she has cultivated over the course of many decades” (SNHU,
n.d.). April was also able to have a good relationship with her significant other and maintain a successful
career. Social factors that influenced Juid’s development was having an abusive, alcoholic father and a
depressed mother. Because of that, Judi ended up in a psychologically abusive relationship and very few
friends.
●Explain whether nature or nurture had a more significant role in April’s and Judi’s
development. Support your answers with examples from the scenario.
oConsider using biological, psychological, and social factors in your response.
From everything stated in the scenario, it seems to me that nurture had a more significant role
in the twins' development. “Nurture works in part through learning- all the processes through
1
which experience brings about relatively permanent changes in thoughts, feelings, or
behavior” (Sigelman and Rider, 2021). The positive environment that April grew up in showed
her what good relationships look like which helped her personal and professional relationships.
Since her parents constantly were providing her with positive reinforcement, it gave her the
confidence to achieve all her goals. Judi, on the other hand, grew up with parents who had a
terrible relationship and terrible mental issues. This resulted in her putting herself in abusive
situations with significant others and had no confidence which led to her having no motivation.
●Explain why it is important to consider nature and nurture in combination throughout the life
span when evaluating an individual’s well-being.
It is important to consider nature and nurture in combination throughout the lifespan when
evaluating an individual's well-being because, as stated in our textbook, there would be no
development without both. “For example, biology (nature) may provide us with a basic design
for a human brain but from the start experience (nurture) helps construct our brain by affecting
its neural connections” (Sigelman and Rider, 2021). Both nature and nurture have impacts on a
person's behavior and mental health and understanding both of their roles will give you a more
comprehensive understanding of those things.
