Individuals who are neurodiverse should not change themselves to conform to mainstream
society. First and foremost, they should not because it is not a choice. Individuals do not
choose to be neurodiverse just as blind people do not choose to be blind. They deserve to be
themselves unashamedly just as other types of diverse individuals do. Also, because being
neurodiverse helps new ideas and different ideas come to be and contribute to our society.
Society benefits from different ways of thinking by opening new ideas and ideas that may not
come from people that are not neurodiverse. Different ways of thinking help in problem
solving and inventing things. It gives different or new perspective to situations and
information.
We can move away from the stigma of neurodiversity being regarded as something to fix and
toward an understanding of it as a normal variation of humanity by implementing acceptance
early on in school and changing school curriculum to better suit neurodiverse individuals. I
think it would also help to initiate a movement where individuals who are neurodiverse share
the fact that they are, and I feel like a lot of people would be surprised at who is in their life
that that had no idea weas and see that it is just a normal part of life.
Neurodiversity applies to the theme social justice as being neurodivergent could be looked at
as a minority and or disability that needs representation and social reform. Like mentioned,
there is stigma surrounding neurodivergent differences and that can come with ridicule,
mistreatment, lack of understanding and patience and many other things that “neurotypical”
folks do not experience or deal with.
Individuals who are neurodiverse should not conform to mainstream society. Having a
neurological disability, I have had multiple surgeries to be what society deems normal. I think
society may slow down the bullying rate. We can move away from the stigma by still offering
support and being kind while showing others the same respect. The course theme that bests
fits is Eiths. Neurodiversity is an important aspect of society. If everyone thinks the same way,
it would be impossible to gain new perspectives on different ideas and thoughts. However,
neurodivergences are often treated as a condition, instead of just a difference in thoughts and
ideas. People with neurodivergences do not think and respond to stimuli in the same way as
neurotypical people in society, and they should not be forced to conform to what is "normal",
especially since there is nothing wrong with being neurodivergent. By utilizing different ways
of thinking, society could gain a new perspective. One of the best ways to move away from
thinking that neurodivergences are lesser than is to integrate neurodiverse people into places
of power. This would provide an example to everyone that all forms of thinking are acceptable
and welcomed. Many people who have a neurodiverse way of thinking can provide a new
perspective on social issues as well as learning more about emotional intelligence.
I do not believe individuals who are neurodiverse should change themselves to conform to
mainstream society. It is no different than you having blue eyes, and me green. Every single
person has unique traits, brains working differently is just what makes a neurotypical person
more distinctive.
Society can benefit from different ways of thinking because many minds together can bring
loads of opportunity, perspectives, and opinions!
In my opinion the best way to move away from the stigma of neurotypical people needing to
be fixed is to simply accept that they are also humans, with human brains. They just happen to
use them slightly different than non-neurodivergent people.
The concept of neurodiversity certainly applies to self-care. Many neurodivergent people
really struggle with self-care and sometimes even basic needs. There are many self-soothing
tactics that NT people use when they are overwhelmed and sometimes it becomes too much to
the point of neglecting themselves in both basic needs (brushing teeth, showering, doing the
dishes) and self-care (having routines, proper rest, exercise, calming techniques) manners.
Everyone is different and absorbs information in different ways, individuals should not have
to change their ways to the "normal" ways of society. Everyone that is struggling with
Neurodiversity should show different ways to learn and able to find their niche that allows for
growth and a successful life. Society should Society needs to be accepting to differences
around them, ADHD, Dyslexia, Autism, not to mention lifestyle choices, these are some of the
daily differences we all face and need to be accepting too, judging people of their differences,
and expecting them to "change" to fit-in will not benefit or help growth for society or the
individual struggling with these issues. People with Neurodiversity should be celebrated not
treated as a disorder (Maceachron, D,2018).
c c c Moving forward, I believe we can help educate in the classrooms of the many differences of
each of us, be it learning difficulties, lifestyles, if adults cannot stereotype and show
acceptance to others, than children may become more aware the treating someone different
isn't acceptable, no matter what the Neurodiversity is we should remember to treat others how
we would want to be treated and put ourselves in their "shoes" looking through the eyes of
others always puts perspective on society. c
Individuals who are neurodiverse should not have to change themselves to conform to society.
In some cases, having to change the way they think to conform to society is an impossible task
for a neurodivergent individual. Society should instead embrace the different ways
neurodivergent minds see things and create environments that help them thrive.
Society benefits from different ways of thinking. Someone who has a more precise eye for
detail could notice something important that may have been missed by someone else.
Someone could create a solution to a problem that another did not even notice was a problem. c
Different ways of thinking help our society grow.
There is a lot of stigma around neurodiversity. c There are many who see ADHD and Autism as
a disorder that someone needs to be cured of. Society teaches that they are disabilities that
need to be overcome instead of enabling them to be accepted as themselves. c If we move away
from the idea that neurodivergent individuals need to and can be "healed" we can help them
embrace their different way of thinking (NowThis News, 2018).
Self-care from a neurodivergent individual may look different from a neurotypical one. I
know many people who keep their minds busy by doing something they love, like making
music or drawing, as self-care while others do mindless activities. It just shows that self-care
is based on what the individual person needs.
From my personal experience, I have seen people who are neurodivergent be seen as less
emotionally intelligent. In some cases, this may be true. Some neurodivergent people
struggle to see social cues and to be empathetic. c
People who are neurodiverse should not have to change how they are to conform to societal
norms. These people are often hardwired differently than other members of society, so how
could they possibly truly change even if they wanted to? We live in a society that values
individuality, yet discrimination runs rampant. Claims that the neurodiverse are disabled don't
make sense to me; when a person is a functioning member of society, why should it matter that
they are different? I have lived a long time as someone in a marginalized group, so I know
what it is like looking from the outside in. If being gay was not different enough, and was once
seen as a mental illness, then being a redhead makes it obvious I am different then everyone
else. Different should not mean excluded or wrong.
Society can greatly benefit from different ways of thinking. If everyone thought the same, we
would all be doing the same work, married at 18 with 2.5 kids and a dog. Being able to think
differently allows for different perspectives; neurodiverse people can see things the rest of us
miss and come up with ideas no one else would have thought of. Society needs to stop
focusing on the negative aspects of neurodiversity and focus on the positive things that come
with it. Focus on creativity, deep focus, and clever inventiveness, not negative things like
social anxiety or inability to perceive emotions. Accept that everyone is different, and that is a
great thing.
Neurodiversity has a powerful ally in social justice and ethics. Social justice is about equality
for all people, regardless of their birth or identity. Ethics ensures that the neurodiverse are
treated as human beings; our morals prevent us from treating them as subhuman because they
are different. Being aware of a person's neurodiversity and knowing how that pertains to
emotional intelligence allows us to alter how we treat those people; maybe we speak more
literally in conversation with them, or we do not pat them on the back if that is something that
causes discomfort.
