This article reminded me how important communication is. According to Wien claw,
communication skills are often more crucial than job-specific talents. Communication is
more than simply talking; it is also about how you communicate with people. It explains
how the sound in your voice and your body language when speaking tells the story.
Understanding that everyone's communication style differs is a vital ability to have. And
we must always understand the not everyone perceives the message the same.
I enjoyed how the article went into the actual stages and flow of communication in
depth, as well as some of the challenges that might arise along the road. I also
appreciated that it spoke on how technology is used in business and on of the top ways
of communication and less and less in person connections.
As a manager, I always try to remind myself of how I felt when the direction wasn’t
clear. How frustrating it was when instructions were not clear and effectively
communicated within Departments. I have been in situations where managers delegated
without explicit instruction.
Today, my experience is a bit different. As part of an executive team although we all
have our specific roles some of the “power” is shared. There have been instances where
staff has been confused because we were not sending the same message and/or
someone overstepped and did not follow procedures. But I also realized that the lack of
communication between the executive team was because we were not given clear
instructions.
Another thing that resonated with me is that I realize a big generation gap exists
between my staff and myself. I have had to learn to acclimate to the younger generation
and their expectations & needs as well. However, I also realized that My expectations
needed to be clear for my leadership and guidance to be effective. This way they are
able to learn the things that they don’t know and strengthen the skills they already bring
to the table. That created a sense of ownership for their roles. I was able to trust and
delegate more when I set that clear communication on projects.
