Do the leadership skills and behaviours identified for improvement align with a specific
question in the engagement survey?
Areas of improvement needed reviewed from engagement surveys: ‘Working Conditions’,
‘job satisfaction’, and ‘company & strategy.’ I have broken each of these down below
including questions from the engagement survey.
Working Conditions:
Questions form survey:
• “Providers leadership who act in just and ethical ways”
• “I trust my supervisor”
These two questions noted above reflect the need for leadership skills and ethics.
People work better under supervision in which they trust. They also deserve leaders who
act in ethical ways. If the leaders of a company do not act ethically, what does it say
about the overall company? When I was younger my first job was in a local grocery
store. I remember seeing my immediate leadership act in unethical ways, for example
stealing goods. This made me feel not good for working there as it gives a negative
impression for the company not correcting unethical activity.
Job Satisfaction:
Questions from survey:
• “My supervisor shows appreciation for the work that I do”
• “My job makes good use of my skills and abilities”
These two questions reflect the need for leaders to better utilize the skills of employees
and show appreciation for the work they do. Employees should feel satisfied at their job
and the job should utilize their skills. This will help reduce employee turnover if they are
satisfied. At my current job I feel very appreciated for the work that I do, and my skills
are being utilized. The bank prefers to promote from within, so there are numerous
growth opportunities available. It makes me feel appreciated for being a loyal employee.
Company and Strategy:
Questions from survey:
• “My company cares about its employees”
• “I believe the company mission and vision drive the decisions that are made”
These two questions reflect the need for leaders to care more for employees, and invest
in their mission and values. This goes back to improving leadership skills. Investing in
creating shared values and vision develops a path on the way forward that all can follow.
Caring for employees will help encourage them to work hard. How a company treats
their employees speaks volumes to their corporate objectives. There is heavy
competition in the business world. An example where company mission comes into play
in our era is social responsibility. “According to a 2015 survey by Nielsen, more than
50% of consumers are willing to pay more for a product or service if the business
prioritizes sustainability” (Heyword, 2020). This shows that company strategy must be
evolving with current consumer demands.
How will improvement in the leadership skills and behaviors you have identified
positively impact the results in the next employee engagement survey?
If the above behavior is corrected, this will positively affect the engagement survey for
the next time it is done. The engagement survey exemplified that employee want
leaders who value and appreciate them, and act in ethical ways based on company
mission and values. If the company works on these areas, the positive rates of these
correlated questions are sure to improve for the next engagement survey.
