Organ cloning, also known as therapeutic cloning, can potentially be a
massive benefit to medicine. According to Louise Gaille, more than
100,000 people in the United States and countless others worldwide
are waiting on an organ transplant right now. Organ cloning can
eliminate the long wait times for organ transplants. Therapeutic
cloning provides an exact match to the individual who has a tissue or
organ need (Gaille, 2018). However, this process runs the chance of
cell mutation. Mutations can occur spontaneously, even when using
somatic cells for genetic transfer (Gaille, 2018). These mutations have
caused embryos not to divide as expected and created the threat of
tumors (Gaille, 2018). a
Robotic surgery allows surgeons to perform surgery in hard-to-reach
places through smaller incisions. In addition to smaller incisions, the
benefits of robotic surgery are lower risk of infection, shorter hospital
stays, and reduced blood loss, to name a few. The downside to
robotic surgery is that it is more expensive than open surgery.
Therefore, robotic surgery is only available in centers that can afford
the technology and have specially trained surgeons (Robotic Surgery:
Robot-Assisted Surgery, Advantages, Disadvantages, 2021). Another
disadvantage of robotic surgery is that the surgeon may need to
convert to an open procedure with larger incisions if there are
complications (Robotic Surgery: Robot-Assisted Surgery, Advantages,
Disadvantages, 2021).
