John Muir Health Medical Center is a nonprofit hospital with two locations, Walnut creek and
Concord California. John Muir Health Medical Center also has many outpatient clinics located
throughout the Bay Area. f The Walnut Creek location is the only trauma center in Contra Costa
County and houses about 555 beds (John Muir health company profile: Walnut Creek, CA:
Competitors, Financials & Contact, 2020). Both hospitals have been ranked very highly by the
U.S. News & World Report in its 2020/2021 list of America’s Best Hospitals (John Muir Health,
n.d.). f John Muir Hospital is named after an influential naturalist, John Muir who is known as the
activist who helped preserve Yosemite Valley National Park and many others. He believed in
preserving and protecting nature not only for wildlife, but also for the wellbeing of humans (About
John Muir, n.d).
John Muir Health Medical Center’s mission states as follows “We are dedicated to improving
the health of the communities we serve with quality and compassion” (John Muir Health, n.d.).
Some of the vision values include Providing quality health care services and an exceptional
experience to our communities and creating value-driven regional centers of excellence,
delivering pre-eminent tertiary service and advanced medical technology, delivering on our brand
promise: We listen. We explain. We work together as a team, etc. (John Muir Health, n.d.). All of
John Muir’s core values, mission statement, and vision outlook is clearly stated not only
throughout their website, but also throughout the hospital and outpatient centers, to remind
patients and healthcare providers that they strive for nothing but the best. f At John Muir health,
their community benefit programs contributions are focused on the vulnerable populations: those
who are low income, experience significant barriers to care such as language, culture,
transportation, or health insurance, and who are part of groups who experience disparities in health
outcomes (John Muir Health, n.d.).

John Muir Health accepts a vast majority of insurance plans. Health Maintenance
Organizations (HMO) is an insurance company that focuses on lower premiums and fewer out
of pocket costs, meanwhile preferred provider organizations (PPO) have higher premiums due
to the flexibility of using medical providers within and outside a network without a referral
(Humana, 2022). Point of service plans (POS) is generally low cost due to the patient staying
within the network and usually requires referrals from the primary doctor to see a specialist
(healthcare Gov, 2022). Health Reimbursement Arrangements (HRA) is an agreement between
the employee and employer as to the employees being able to receive reimbursement for their
medical expenses. The Health Insurance Exchanges Plans (HIE) is basically a marketplace for
comparing health care insurances (Elizabeth Davis, 2021). Despite the difference in health
insurance plans that a patient may have, John Muir Health accepts most plans.
John Muir Health medical center in Walnut Creek has reported to bring in a revenue of 2.11
billion dollars (John Muir health company profile: Walnut Creek, CA: Competitors, Financials &
Contact, 2020). According to the John Muir Health annual report from 2019, 93.5% of their
revenue went directly to program services (Ken Schwencke, M. T.,2013). f This is clearly illustrated
in figure 1. The three main program services they invested in to serve the community better are the
Community Health Improvement, John Muir/Mt. Diablo Community Health Fund, and Patient
Financial Assistance Program. The Community Health Improvement program is one of the biggest
community support programs that John Muir Health offers. According to the 2020 John Muir
Community Benefit Report, 1.8 million dollars was invested into program support for community
based health centers and nonprofits; 2.1 million dollars was invested into community organization
sponsorships like disaster relief and facility space; 4.9 million dollars was invested into health
profession education and research such as: f family medicine residency program, internships, and
4
government funded research; 5.8 million dollars was invested into charity care which provided
care for free or reduced prices and for low income populations; 8.3 million dollars was invested
into community health improvement which included health system programs and nonprofit
sponsorships, wellness education, subsidized health services, and community building activities;
106 million dollars was invested into unpaid costs of medi-cal (2020 community benefit report.
(n.d.). During the pandemic, John Muir was able to donate over $300k in emergency contributions
to more than thirty nonprofit organizations as well as donated 3,000 medical masks, 3,000 cloth
masks, 200 hygiene kits, and 10,000 individual hand sanitizers to help the community battle
COVID-19 (2020 community benefit report. (n.d.). This is a prime example of what we have
learned in module 2 in terms of how nonprofit organizations revenue are invested back into the
organization.
