The most significant benefits that Medicare, Medicaid, and (HIPAA)
have brought to the healthcare industry are as follows. "Medicare is a
federal health insurance program for qualifying individuals, including
people age 65 and older, those with certain disabilities, and
individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), also known as
permanent kidney failure" (Blackwell, 2022). This allows eligible
people to carry affordable medical coverage. "Medicaid provides
health coverage to millions of Americans, including eligible low-
income adults, children, pregnant women, elderly adults and people
with disabilities" (Medicaid, 2022). Medicaid covers 80 million people
who otherwise would not have health insurance. HIPAA protects
patients privacy as a law. "a federal law that required the creation of
national standards to protect sensitive patient health information
from being disclosed without the patient’s consent or knowledge"
(CDC, 2018).
The most significant challenges they have presented to decision
making in the industry are a way to provide affordable health care
coverage to people in need as well as keeping patient information
private. Medicare and Medicaid have a huge task of providing health
care coverage to millions of people. Medicaid covers a lot of
preventative care which controls the need for medical issues. One
issue is deciding what to cover and who to accept to provide
insurance to. HIPAA prevents Medicare and Medicaid from sharing
information without patient consent which provides a significant
challenge when providing medical coverage. HIPAA makes it more
difficult for caregivers with increased documentation and delay in
care when transmitting information.
