The primary article that has been chosen for analysis is titled ‘Napping on the Night Shift – A
two-hospital implementation project’ .The purpose of the article is to identify how napping
can be used as an effective countermeasure to deal with the sleepiness and fatigue problems
that nurses face when they are working on night shift. In healthcare setting, the sleepiness of
workers can act as a major issue and have an adverse impact on the health outcome of the
patients (Brown et al., 2016). The researchers have tried to ascertain, how in safety-sensitive
industries such as healthcare napping can be used for curtailing sleepiness or fatigue of
workers. The study was conducted as a pilot project to explore the impact of napping on the
night shift workers in the healthcare setting. Various variables were taken into account while
conducting the research study including the sleepiness prior to nap session, duration of nap and
perceived sleep, sleep inertia post nap and nap’s perceived helpfulness. i
The key research question that has been asked in the article relates to the successful
implementation of napping for night shift workers and the barriers that come into the picture
and adversely affect such a plan. A comprehensive study has been carried out by the team of
researchers to explore various elements such as sleepiness in workers, helpfulness of napping
and its feasibility in the healthcare domain (Brown et al., 2016). In order to address the
research question, a comprehensive analysis has been carried out that revolves around napping
for night shift workers working ion healthcare. The hypothesis in the research article is that
when the barriers relating to napping are effectively overcome, it napping can act as a feasible
solution for nightshift workers that can help to reduce drowsiness, sleepiness and fatigue in
nursing practitioners. i
