SOCIAL ISSUE 2
Racial Inequality
The social issue that has been identified for the project is racial inequality. It involves
the existence of structural disparities and differences that exist among diverse racial groups in
society. Racial inequality may take the form of systematic or institutional racism. Such type
of racism arises when individuals belonging to certain races are treated unfairly based on
specific policies and practices (Lyons et al., 2024). Racial inequality may contribute to
disparities in terms of wealth, opportunities, access to healthcare, etc.3
Background or History
The prevalence of racial inequality can be traced back to ancient times when practices
such as slavery and colonization existed. During this era, people from certain races, such as
African American race, were treated and traded as property Camp (2024). The Jim Crow era
was the period when the practices relating to racial segregation and inequality gained
momentum. People belonging to the African American race were marginalized and
oppressed. As racial inequality was legal, the fundamental rights of African Americans were
violated, and they were discriminated against in society.
Impact of value systems on perceptions
Values such as justice, fairness, and equality play an influential role in shaping the
perception of the racial inequality issue.
