i The topic I would like to revisit through the social science lens, is what
I wrote about in my discussion last week, “The Rebranding of Sleep”.
Analyzing and comprehending this topic through the Science and
Wellness lens, is like comparing to an apple to an orange quite frankly.
The Rebranding of Sleep has come a long way in regard to scientific
research and the technology that was provided to aid into this. But
when you examine this issue of sleep through the social lens, it
becomes a different animal in terms of fully understanding the entire
scope. As we have learned throughout this course, the social science
lens looks at how humans act in their social environment. While the
humanities also study human action, social sciences more specifically
look at our social relations, our relationships, and our societies. So, with
that said, what is our social relationship to the topic of sleep. Do we
seek out ways to improve our sleep? Do we see the many
advertisements that are on our televisions, computers, and
smartphones? We as a society have more information on sleep, and the
branding of sleep, that we ever had before. The social science lens has
influenced my understanding of The Rebranding of Sleep by giving me
clarity on how I myself, and a significant part of overall society value
sleep. Why has society placed such a high priority on sleep in 2022 vs
1992? The plethora of information and technology that is available that
allows us to view sleep through a different lens! My topic analysis has
expanded and strengthened by using multiple lenses, by allowing me to
have an open mind and see the value that each lens attributes to my
overall understanding of the topic. Above all, it has allowed me to view
this from many different angles, and develop a truly complete view of
the topic from start to finish!
