The St. Catherine’s Medical Center, St. Luke’s Hospital, and Hickman Community
Hospital have a distinctive mission and vision statements that they have been following while
operating in the metropolitan area in the Midwest. St. Catherine’s mission is to offer accurate
patient health information services to one and all (Alam & Alabdulaali, 2015). Its vision is to
focus on respecting their privacy and sensitivity aspects. St. Luke’s mission is to offer diverse
stakeholders like residents, providers, and staff timely access to patient health information so
that treatment, reimbursement, and research activities can be done. Its vision is to focus on state-
of-the-art technology and promote research. The Hickman facility’s mission is to safeguard
patient health information, and its vision is to serve the community’s health information needs.
The common elements that can help to move towards a unified mission include the use
of patient health information by leveraging technology so that high-quality services can be
offered to diverse stakeholders. High emphasis is laid on the privacy aspects so that the PHI can
be handled in a responsible manner by the facilities.
A key element that is missing revolves around the human capital that will be responsible
for achieving the mission and vision statements of the health care facilities. While devising the
statements, the health care entities need to focus on the role that the health care professionals
and practitioners will play to help the entities advance towards their goals of serving the
community (Alam & Alabdulaali, 2015). Thus, a key improvement that can be suggested
involves improving the technical skills and expertise of the healthcare workers so that they can
be empowered to securely and strategically use PHI to offer high-quality solutions in the
community.

A new mission statement that the Gateway Healthcare Systems HIM department can
adopt while operating in the community setting includes To empower the health care staff to
use state-of-the-art technology while working in the health care domain so that patient health
information can be optimally used for diverse purposes of research, treatment, and care. Such a
mission statement highlights the fact that the health care professional will play an instrumental
role and help the new facility to capitalize on innovation while utilizing PHI in the health
domain. The mission unifies the key elements of the missions of each of the facilities.
The vision statement for Gateway Healthcare Systems HIM Department
A suitable vision statement that Gateway Healthcare Systems can adopt while operating
in the region includes Ensure that the health care professionals make the responsible use of
patient health information so that the top-quality health solutions can be offered to the
community members without compromising their privacy or confidentiality.’ The vision that
has been designed highlights the fact that while the facility will focus on the health needs of the
people, it will also give due importance to the safe handling of their personal data and
information. Such a vision can enable the newly formed entity to focus on its responsibility to
offer and deliver quality care while carefully integrating technology into its processes and
practices.
The new mission and vision statements that have been designed for Gateway Healthcare
Systems can help it to remain focused on the reason for its existence, i.e., to meet the health
needs of the people.
