Information literacy refers to the ability to search, evaluate, apply and
communicate information in a diverse range of forms. In the technology-driven times of
the 21st century, information literacy skills are considered to be one of the most
important employability skills that a professional can have. Thus developing the
appropriate information literacy skills can help an individual to effectively adapt to the
digitalized professional environment. Information literacy skills help an individual in
various professional areas such as problem-solving, decision-making or the acquisition of
knowledge. In the prevalent times technology has made its mark in almost each and
every industry as well as sector. Hence it has increased the importance to possess
information literacy skills that can be used in the highly dynamic professional career
landscape (Probert, 2009).
The intensity of competition in the labour market has been increasing with every
passing day. Thus acquiring information literacy skills and upgrading these skills has
become a necessity for professionals so that they can have a competitive edge over their
peers. In addition to this, the professionals can use these skills in order to create value
for themselves as well as for their employer (Probert, 2009).
In our academic or professional career, the information literacy skills that I
possess would play an integral role to mold my ability to succeed. By working on these
skills that revolve around technology and innovation, I would be able to adapt and
adjust in the evolving professional context. Thus I would be empowered to use
technological innovations to my advantage by using my information literacy competency.
As the role and influence of technology has substantially increased in a diverse range of
professional landscapes, I could deploy my information literacy skills to deal with
different situations in an effective and efficient manner. Thus having strong information
literacy skills would have a major impact on my professional career.
