The artifact that I chose would be A Wrinkle In Time by Author Madeline L’Engle. This book
displays a mix between spiritual content and science fiction. C.S Lewis, the author of Harry
Potter, writes books in a similar genre. Harry Potter books have been banned in some places
due to the ongoing controversy over whether or not the book dabbles in themes of witchcraft
and spell casting. What truly astonishes me is how we have become so tolerant of certain
things as a society but yet so stringent in regard to other things. Books in the scientific genre
and with fictional child characters have been labeled and even banned to such an extreme
sense.
The controversy here lies with Christians, who have let their strong beliefs in witchcraft and
supernatural things be bad, which they claim that this book strongly promotes. Then, on the
other hand, there are people who absolutely love books in this genre. The Christians argue
that the book incorrectly represents God and Jesus and other Christian Historical figures,
hence why it should be banned, while fanatics of this genre argue that it is just a fictional
book that shouldn’t be so heavily looked into and scrutinized.
