Jan Scruggs may not be the creator of the Vietnam Wall, but he could be credited for planting the
seed, as he fought tooth and nail for something to commemorate those lost in the Vietnam War.
From 1978 to 1984, the nation was in an uproar on how to memorialize one of the most
disruptive wars in history, and the first that the United States had lost. During this time, the U.S.
was in competition to produce an appropriate form to pay tribute to the surrender in the Vietnam
War. “It was an extraordinary struggle between groups with different attitudes toward what some
called the 20 Century’s “lost cause,” and what constitutes honor and courage in times of
