PROJECT PROPOSAL 2
The cultural work I have chosen for my project is Mary Beth Edelson’s “Death of
Patriarchy / A.I.R. Anatomy Lesson” collage. The first thing that grabbed my attention in viewing
this piece was the man on the table surrounded only by women. The man is labeled ‘The
Patriarchy’ and it shows the women performing surgery on him. When I realized this art piece
was from 1976, it shocked me to realize that the fight against the patriarchy for basic women’s
rights began so long ago and yet we are still finding ourselves fighting for those rights. I knew all
the women in this collage had to have a deeper meaning and when I found out they were all
female artists that were crucial to the feminist movement this artwork became more than just a
collage to me.
In this artwork I think Edelson wants to express how important women’s rights are and
how the patriarchy really effects women. These women’s faces were placed onto the bodies of
doctors and that alone was such a huge win for the feminist movement. At that time women
weren’t thought to be able to do anything other than stay home and raise children. Women were
meant to be seen and not heard. I think the artist also wanted to bring attention to the fact that
women’s bodies have never really been their own and have always belonged to the men in
politics because of how few rights women once had, even over their own bodies and
reproductive systems. I think she conveyed this so well that even now in 2023 this work of art is
still so relatable and just goes to show how many cultural works come full circle no matter how
long ago they were created.

The cultural work I have chosen that is unfamiliar to me is “The Scream” by Edvard
Munch. I chose this artwork because I am very unfamiliar with this type of art and learning about
it is very interesting to me. When looking at this picture my first thought is that the person
depicted is scared but it’s hard to tell what has frightened them. When I researched further it was
mentioned that he painted this picture as a reflection of himself, being scared after being left out
in nature alone when his friends kept going without him. I think it is important to research other
cultures because everything has different meanings and without doing further research, we would
never get to know each other or other cultures.
