COUNSELING APPROACH2
Summary
The client presenting for treatment is Katie N. She is a 32-year-old female with two
daughters and a husband at home. Katie was charged with a DWI and has made it clear she is
only here because she has been court ordered. She completed the DWI program she was assigned
to and still does not believe she was at fault for her DWI. She blames the police officer who
pulled her over and does not believe she has a drinking problem. Katie admits she drinks to
relieve the stress of being a mother, a wife and holding down a full-time job. Katie began
drinking alcohol when she was 15 and recalls feeling happy after drinking the first time. Katie
does report a history of marijuana and cocaine use but states she no longer uses either drug.
When it comes to Katies family history it does seem as though she has a past exceedingly
full of childhood trauma. Katies sister Sarah passed away at a young age and Katie does
frequently feel guilt surrounding her death. Sarah was killed in a crosswalk and Katie believes
had she not been preoccupied she would have been able to prevent Katies passing. Katies mother
coped by heavily drinking, her father enabled and cared for her alcoholic mother and her sister,
Amanda, developed an eating disorder. This is also a topic that Katie would like to avoid
speaking about any further. Katie reports she and her sister Amanda do have a good relationship
and Amanda frequently visits and babysits her two daughters.
Katies immediate family consists of her two daughters Sarah, and Jennifer, as
well as her husband, Joe. Katie confides in her daughter Sarah who is only 10 years old. She
