A time I helped a family member out with a problem. Long story short
my little brother is 15 and is going through the normal teenage
struggles of finding himself and fitting in and puberty on top of his
PTSD due to the fact he was a foster child and his mother died when
he was six. He was in the same room as her when it happened and his
family didn't want to raise him but loves to spend holidays with him
and have him over every other weekend and stay connected and tell
him family gossip that is way too much weight for a 15-year-old boy.
His problem was that he had his first love and he was not emotionally
open with our mother he wanted to see this girl over the summer but
never asked and they ultimately had to break up because she found
someone who would come and see her. It was really hard on him not
only because first loves stink but he emotionally connected with her
and in my personal opinion that makes things ten times worse. Now I
knew about this for some time now not about that he was seeing
something but on top of everything he has to deal with there was
something a bit extra going on I figured it was his family and I made it
a point to let him know I was there for him no matter what...he came
close to tell ing me a couple of times and then about 5 months later...I
came home and he was having a full-on panic attack in his room I gave
him water and hugged him and let him know he doesn't need to feel
so heavy all the time and how exhausting that must be. I told him I
would check on him on and off going from 5 mins to 10 mins to
eventually 30 mins until he felt safe and had calmed down. I let my
mom and sister know what was going on but to not go in and pester
him as he would close back up and all the comfort I gave him would
be lost and he would go into a defensive mood. an hour later he came
to me asking for some more food and I gave him some and told him
we could go for a walk or he could or we could go for a drive if he
needed to be in a fresh space. it ended in us taking a drive and him
venting and sharing the details of his past 6 months with me and that
he was sorry he was so moody and angry but he felt he was failing a
friend and couldn't talk about it with anyone because no one would
understand. my method for getting him to talk in the car and him not
feel like he had to talk as I told stories first and after I finished I would
tell him he could talk now or I would ask if he wanted me to ask him
questions to help him talk.
Stages in the helping process.
1- Preparation
2-The Client Arrives
3-Exploring the problem
4-Intervention Strategies
5-Ending client services
Preparation is how you set the tone and how the client may take it.
When the client arrives there needs to be respect and acceptance of
the client. The client should be approached with a smile and care etc.
Some clients can’t wait to tell the worker about their problems but
others won’t and there are ways to make them feel comfortable
enough to do that. Exploring the problem is when the problems of the
client are being discussed. When the problems are identified you can
move on to the next stage which is Intervention Strategies which is
setting goals to resolve the problems. Termination is when the
relationship between client and professional may end which can be a
positive way when both participants are satisfied. I don't think I
differed from much rather than since it was a personal situation it
required more care or boundaries maybe.
