In the class, three service delivery models have been explained: public health, medical and human
services. Here, the medical service delivery model emphasizes the patients and looks after the
individual as ill or sick. Usually, these patients rely on a service provider to improve their illness. The
medical model of service delivery consists of the diagnosis, symptom, cure and treatment (The
Composition of Happiness. The composition of happiness, 2014). In order to offer well-being to the
patient, this model follows certain steps by focusing on the medical interventions. The intervention
may include lab studies, medication, or physical therapies to provide better care. Many treatment
methods and drugs are used in this model to treat the condition of the patient.
The human services model focuses on offering services that meet the client's needs by addressing any
kind of problems they are facing. The human service model focuses on the interaction between the
environment and the individual and keeps a balance between these two to meet the needs. Here,
environmental and interpersonal conflicts are given importance in this model. According to R S
Daniels, the human services system has many problems in addressing the delivery of education,
health, and welfare services, including fragmentation of services, impediments to entry into the human
services system, lack of services available, attitudes of the providers, attitudes of the recipients, lack of
attention to outreach and prevent, and financial considerations (Daniels, 1969). This model is different
from the medical and public models because it looks at the issues as a necessity to daily life.
The public health model emphasizes mainly diseases or the main cause of the problem and how it can
be prevented in society. For instance, what are the main causes of HIV/AIDS, and how can it be
prevented? Regarding the treatment and diagnosis process, the medical and public health models have
some similarities. The only difference is that the public health model pays attention to groups of
people and the medical model pays attention to individual people. c
Overall, there are some similarities and differences between these three-service delivery models. It has
been identified that these service delivery models are helpful to individuals in solving some issues or
problems. Each of these models has a different point of view on looking after the treatment needs.
However, the medical model emphasizes diagnosing an individual's diseases, whereas the other two
models pay attention to individual, community, society and prevention.
The models include the human services model, public health model, and the medical model. In
general, both the medical model and public health model fail in many client situations. Human
services are a sprawling area of study encompassing a variety of jobs and skill sets. The focus and
defining element of human services is the helping quality in which human service workers form
helping relationships with clients to assist with issues. The helping relationship is formed for the idea
that human or social issues can be prevented, remediated, and managed. Human service workers
belong to an interdisciplinary field that draws on many bodies of knowledge to carry out its functions
within the helping relationship. As such the field of human services is dedicated to improving the
quality of life for its service populations. Human services is founded on the concept of “helping people
improve their lives”. Within this context human services is similar to social work but not exactly the
same. While social work and human services share the focus of helping people, each field approaches
this goal differently. Typically, human services workers concentrate their efforts on large populations
to deliver services to groups as opposed to individuals. For example, human service workers may
work with homeless populations as opposed to individual cases of homelessness. Medical model is for
an individual that has a problem that is either a sickness or disease. These individuals depend on a
physician to provide treatment or a cure for their sickness or disease. The medical model system
consists of the symptom, diagnosis, treatment, and cure. It follows these steps to provide well-being to
the individual. Public health provides well-being for the entire community. Public health is defined in
three ways. The first is by examining the history of the developments, the achievements, and the
health successes. The second one is to achieve the mission of promoting physical and mental health to
prevent any diseases, injuries, or disabilities. For instance, preventing epidemics being able to control
the epidemic before the community is in danger. The third is to learn how to adapt to the
circumstances of life. Learning how to handle problems in life to maintain physical and mental health
to provide satisfaction in an individual’s life. Human services is between the individual and the
environment and balancing out the two of them. For example, if a client has a mental illness, it will
affect their behavior. The human service model will treat this client by working with both the
individual and the environment that is around him. In this model it is important to focus on the
positive aspects of the client rather than the negatives.
The Medical Model
Our textbook explains that the medical model "sees the person coming for help as an individual whose
problem is a disease or a sickness" In summary the medical model is based on a personal issue of the
client. A more of a psychological model. The medical model developed by medical professionals that
mental illness impairs the individual ability to function. The professionals that incorporate the medical
model use medication, Labotory studies, and physical therapy. (Woodside, McClam, 2019, p. 137). I
think that the medical model focuses more on the personal aspect of the client. Which is on a more
personal level of treatment.
Public Health Model
In summary the public health model resembles the medical model, but the models are different
because of how the models differ in recipients and the methodologies of the treatment. The medical
model focuses more on the individual whereas the public health model is focused on groups of people
and the environment. The public health model focuses on poverty, country, region, state and children
and the elderly. This particular model focuses on the malfunctions or pressures created by an
environment or by a society. (Woodside, McClam, 2019, p.142).
The Human Service Model
Our textbook states that "the human service model is concerned with the interaction between the
individual and the environment stressing the need for balance between the two." (Woodside, McClam,
2019, p. 147). In summary the human service model provides services to the client based on
interpersonal and environmental conflicts.
The medical model is individual focused and looks at the issue at a personal and on an individual basis
which is a personal aspect. Where the public health model is focused on both the client and the
surrounding environment of the client which can be more of a social and environmental aspect. The
human service model is a combination of both the medical model and the public health model which
focuses on both the issue and personal health issues of the client and the influences of the environment
that affects the client. Overall, the client is focused in all three models. The differences are that the
medical model is mor on a personal level and the public health model includes the possibilities of the
environment on client issues. The human service model is a combination of both which include the
personal problems/issues of the client and how the problems that the client has is caused due to the
environment. looking into a more cultural aspect of the client's issues.
