I chose to explore the topic of Chernobyl, found under climate change and environmental issues.
Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences.
Chernobyl was a nuclear power plant in Ukraine that suffered a massive explosion in the 80’s,
releasing large amounts of radioactive materials into the atmosphere. Many lives were lost due
to this tragedy, and exposure to high levels of radiation over time have cause hundreds of
people to develop various forms of cancer and other health problems leading to death.
Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose.
I am a bit of a conspiracy theorist and have come across many articles about Chernobyl stating
that people were quarantined there to run test on and still to this day inhabit the area. It is also
said that animals exposed to high levels of radiation after the incident, were captured and made
to breed with their own species as well as cross bread with other species to see the unusual
outcomes. Chernobyl is now a place that attracts many tourist who are interested in what’s
really going there and risk being exposed to levels of radiation that could cause future health
problems. This should not be a place that allows tourist to roam freely exposing themselves to
such high levels of radiation.
Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society.
Chernobyl was recently brought up in currents events dealing with the war between Russia and
the Ukraine. It was said that Russian soldiers had taken over Chernobyl and set up camps there.
Even though they were only there for a short time, their presence there caused an increase in
radiation levels and Russian soldiers were more than likely exposed.
