• A clinical information system (CIS) refers to an information system that is
particularly designed to be used in the critical healthcare environment (Agency for Clinical
Innovation (ACI), 2016). It has specialized structures that allow easy collection and storage
of data efficiently. It has the ability to effectively network with the different computer
systems used in the healthcare setting and collect patient information from all the systems.
It then stores the information in the form of an electronic patient record. It helps in making
all the health information, radiology, pathology, etc., of the patients available in one place.
It proves to be beneficial for the patients as well as the healthcare providers. It allows the
healthcare professionals to make better decisions and deliver improved quality care to the
patients in the healthcare setting. The use of CIS can also reduce the chance of errors while
collecting and storing information manually. It is a better and ideal solution for collecting
and storing the healthcare data of the patients.
• There are a number of ways in which the clinical information system is adaptable
and accessible compared to the paper system. In the paper-based system, a healthcare
professional needs to go through a number of health reports of the patients in order to
deliver the right treatment and make correct care decisions. However, there are still chances
that the provider may skip any papers, thereby resulting in errors in the delivery of care.
Organizing and accessing the paper files is a challenging task. On the other hand, the
clinical information system makes all the information easily accessible to healthcare
providers. It is especially beneficial for the healthcare organizations that handle hundreds of
patients in the critical care unit on a daily basis. The use of CIS helps in saving the time of
the healthcare providers and lowering the risk of healthcare errors.
• The use of CIS will have a significant impact on the finance of the organization.
According to studies, clinical errors in the US costs nearly 19.5 billion dollars (Islam et al.,
2018). The implementation of the CIS can help in reducing the chances of clinical error,

thereby lowering such costs. However, there are costs associated with the purchase and
installation of the clinical information systems. The cost of purchasing the EHR varies
between $15,000 to $70,000 (How much is this going to cost me? HealthIT.gov, 2014).
Other financial costs that may be associated with the implementation of CIS are software,
hardware, training, as well as maintenance. However, the use of CIS is mainly considered
as a quality improvement measure instead of a cost-saving measure.
