I will be looking into being promoted at my current company hopefully within the next year.
Right now, there is not an opening in the next higher position in my department, but one of my
co-worker’s will be preparing for retirement soon. To advance to the next position I need to
have my bachelor's degree in HIM, which I will have soon when I finish this program.
This will be the end of my school days. It feels like I have been in school as an adult forever. I
believe, I've finally found the career I want to stick with in Health Information Management, so I
can finally enjoy just working in the field. Me getting my RHIA may or may not help with
advancement in my current department or organization. I say that because, I have my RHIT,
and it didn't change the rate of my pay at my current organization. If I decide to leave my
current organization, it may carry more weight for me. I'll just have to wait and see what comes
my way.
• It is hard to believe that this is the last week of this course. This is almost the end
of the line for me before I graduate. Before I can earn my Bachelor’s Degree, I must
complete my internship. Once I have my degree, I will be looking for a new job and
career in Health Information Management (HIM). This is where living in a small town
has its disadvantages. To find a new job and career, I will have to drive a long distance
to a larger city to achieve this. It is not going to be an easy task to find a new job, as I
don’t have any experience in the healthcare industry. I have learned so much in each
of the classes that I have taken. I have also been thinking about going further in my
education by going for a Master’s Degree in Health Information Management (HIM). I
really enjoy the field of HIM, but I need someone to take a chance and hire me with no
experience. This will allow me to put my education into good use and at the same time
allow me to build up my experience. Getting a job in what I majored in, will be a good
steppingstone in helping me achieve a Master’s Degree in Health Information
Management. Are you looking to be promoted at your current company? If so, what do
you need to demonstrate to advance your career?
Yes, I will be applying to open positions within my current company. I need to demonstrate a
bachelor’s degree in a health information management and a RHIA certification.
• Are you looking to transition into a new career field? What preparation do you need to
complete to qualify for the new role?
I am not looking to transition into a new career field. I want to expand my current position into a
role utilizing my bachelor’s degree.
• Are you looking to enter the health information management field? What is your post-
graduation plans to enter the field of study?
I am looking to enter the HIM field. I will be sitting for my RHIA certification. Then, I will apply
for jobs with my new credentials and qualifications.
• What journals, associations, or websites might help you to achieve your goals? See the
resources in this module for a starting point.
AHIMA is a great resource for the HIM field. I also follow my state HIM chapter on social media
where they share job postings. Indeed, and LinkedIn are great to review the current
requirements for specific positions with particular salaries. Also, I have a small network of
professionals that I can reach out to and inquire about open positions at their company's.
