The last four years have been one exciting experience. I have been tired and have been through
every emotion I can think of in pursuit of my degree. I questioned the choice to do this and was
sure the light at the end of the tunnel was going to the train that took me out. But here we are. The
end of the road is to better ourselves and our futures. I have worked in the field for the last six
years in various roles and for multiple companies. I currently work on the government contracting
side of health information management but would like to return to the public sector.
I am not looking to transfer into a new career field but to move forward in my current career to
become an independent contractor in HIM. There is a lot of preparation, but I feel like I have been
laying the groundwork to make it possible. Several friends have expressed an interest in the idea
over the years as we watched how provider networks are being absorbed into hospital networks,
which are then purchased and incorporated into pharmaceutical and specialty care networks. It's
been very interesting to pay attention to over the last ten years. I know that I will be pursuing
several certifications for credentialing and HIM. I know that AHIMA, HIMSS, and other
professional organizations will be on my radar to join, and I also watch how they are helping to
share the systems as the years go by.
I am reflecting on myself and my learning journey that has helped me to grow as an individual. I
believe the experiences that I have had in the academic landscape have helped me to develop my
knowledge, skills and prowess as an individual. In the near future, I intend to use my learning to
carry out my roles and responsibilities as a competent individual and thrive in a highly competitive
and dynamic professional environment.
I wish to get promoted in the current workplace based on my skills and capabilities. Promotion is
not just about getting a raise or change in the position or designation; it is about being given
additional responsibility. In order to advance in my career, I need to demonstrate a diverse range
of employability skills, such as effective communication ability, decision-making skills, emotional
intelligence, cultural awareness and critical thinking.
As the prevailing job landscaper is filled with unpredictability, I may intend to make a transition
by entering a new career domain. To make a smooth and effective transition, I need to work on my
flexibility and adaptability. These skills can help me to adjust to diverse settings and optimally use
my skills to face new challenges in a work setting.
I am keen to join the health information management field as it can give me an opportunity to
utilize my skills while using technology in the healthcare domain. My post-graduation plans
include developing key skills that can enable me to effectively enter the health information
management domain. Some of the skills that I intend to work on are strengthen my insight on are
interpersonal skills like teamwork and collaboration, communication and leadership, and insight
into appropriate regulations.
