Developing a strategic plan for an organization begins with the mission statement
and is the strategy that transforms long-range visions into reality (Grebner, 2017).
Project management is a method of managing a significant project using a
defined set of procedures to plan and control all of the associated activities
necessary to meet the project goals (Grebner, 2017).
Unifying three different facilities with various cultural, technological, and
compliance issues is a big job for a new HIM director. Combining three missions
and visions into one cohesive mission and vision was a good start to a unified
Gateway Healthcare System. Communicating clear and understandable
benchmarks, and expectations helped to move the project along and gave
supervisors something to base assessments on. The next part was addressing
deficiencies in compliance, standards of practice, and diversity. From there, new
policies and procedures were put into place to improve efficiency, privacy, and
safety.
Project management allows you to plan and control implementation of your goals
by assessing needs, using time management tools, creating teams to handle
aspects of the project, and ways to help you stay focused on the goal. Once the
project is implemented, it must be monitored to maintain quality. The monitoring
process, employee progress and quality and safety of the organization will be
assessed at routine intervals, also defined in the project plan (Grebner, 2017).
