The hospitals within Gateway Healthcare Systems lack diversity.
Apart from 2 staff members at St. Catherine’s who are hearing
impaired, all other health information management staff are of similar
race, beliefs and backgrounds. Creating an education program about
diversity will help promote knowledge, cultural awareness and
inclusion. It may attract more external candidates and make patients
feel more comfortable.
The new diversity education plan will consist of the following
elements:
• Management led interactive training sessions
• Role-playing activities to teach all staff members about
inclusion and diversity
• Teamwork activities with staff about communication, abilities,
practices and attitudes in a variety of cultures
• Monthly activities and resources provided about different
cultures a
• Diversity training for hiring managers to implement during
hiring process
Successful completion of the interactive portion of this training will
be required and a condition of employment for new hires.
After completion of the initial training, this topic will be revisited
yearly to renew the commitment to diversity within Gateway
Healthcare Systems.
