For many years, the mental health community was misunderstood
and given little respect in regard to improving the quality of life
through advancements in the medical world. Because of the Surgeon
General, this gap in the medical world was closed. Behavioral and
mental health medical care has made great strides in the United
States. The development of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of
Mental Disorders (DSM) has helped improve the reporting process
and the conditions of this public health issue.
