ICD was put into place to allow for providers to share information
across the world. There have been 10 versions released before 11
with the first being in 1992. This new version, 11, is entirely digital
and has multilingual capabilities. The input on this version has come
from over 90 countries and numerous health care providers. The new
updates improve the clarity of terms for the general public and helps
with the coding of important details such as type of fracture. Recent
progress in medicine and advances in technology are also included in
the new updates. This version was made to simplify the coding and
provide users with all the necessary electronic tooling that will allow
providers to easily and completely record conditions. There are also
new chapters added on traditional medicine, sexual health, and
gaming disorder. Specifically, ICD-11 was designed to be used for
certification and reporting of caused of deaths, morbidity coding and
reporting, and for clinical documentation. For any country looking to
use ICD-11 there are many different languages available to include
French, Arabic, Chinese, and Spanish. Russian and 20 other
languages are in the works. Even the API, browser, and coding tool
are in different languages if need be.
