Throughout Module One, you learned about the purposes, advantages,
plans, and stakeholders involved in health information exchanges (HIEs). In
Module Two, you will explore the types of technological tools and models
that support the communication, processing, management, and extraction
of data/information between organizations.
Examples of technologies and tools that support HIEs include electronic
medical records, clinical data warehouses, scanners, interfaces, and portals.
Many of these tools work collaboratively to create interoperable systems
and enable the appropriate transfer of information between organizations.
The models for HIE vary between decentralized, centralized, and hybrid
systems with a focus on local, regional, state, and national geographic areas;
they are based on directed, query-based, and consumer-mediated
exchanges of information.
Your assignments in this module will help you examine the various HIE
models and data extraction techniques that may be used in healthcare. In
your short paper, you will review the final project case study and evaluate
the HIE model described as well as the considerations that will need to be
addressed as a result of the implementation. Your journal assignment will
allow you to assess data extraction methods and their effect on patient
outcomes. As you navigate through this module, pay close attention to the
process changes and improvements made possible by the adoption of HIE
tools and models.
