Change is something that is often times met with resistance. Why
change something that has been working just fine for a set amount of
time? One great thing about changing how we do things is
sometimes it helps us do things more efficiently. If I was holding a
town hall meeting to announce an HIE plan, I would first address how
I understand resistance to change. Learning a new skill can be quite
intimidating. I would then transition into how this could help to make
the job easier and focus how information can be shared and gathered
quickly. I think it is important to point out what all a healthcare
company has to gain from change. It is also important to stress how
transitioning to the new system takes time and that there would be
proper training for everyone. Laying out a plan that shows the stages
of implementation and showing the support system for those who
are to learn the HIE can help ease some of those fears. It is also
important to ease these fears by reassuring that the support will still
be there after the new system is implemented.
The stakeholder that should be involved and present should be those
that are going to be using the system day in and day out. Gathering
input from them can help to tailor the system to their needs as well.
Those that are involved in the legal aspect of the organization and
those that work in IT and data security should be involved. The CEO
and management group should also be involved and ready to take a
leadership role in preparing their employees for the change.
