While bringing about a change in the Health Information
Management (HIM) context, it is necessary to take into consideration
diverse stakeholders who would be impacted by it. In order to make
sure that the input from the key stakeholders is heard and given due
importance, several change management strategies need to be
adopted. Such strategies could play an instrumental role to manage
the issue relating to resistance to change (National Learning
Consortium, 2013).
One of the fundamental change management strategies is seeking
continuous input from diverse stakeholders such as staff members,
technical team, physicians, etc. The input from the staff members
would act as a powerful resource that could be utilized for the
purpose of updating the Electronic Health Record (EHR) system and
workflows. Another vital strategy is to adopt transparent and
effective communication so that the stakeholders can share their
concerns relating to the new system (National Learning Consortium,
2013).
The effective engagement with the stakeholders would play a critical
role as it would create an opportunity for sharing information in a
multi-directional manner. It is also necessary to identify the training
needs of the individuals who would be using the new innovative
system in the healthcare setting. Adopting such an approach is
crucial so that they would be able to adjust to the change by working
on their skills, knowledge and ability. While making the change, it is
necessary to collaborate with all the staff members. It would ensure
that all the staff members that function in the practical setting are
able to contribute to the framing of policies, procedures as well as
workflows. The involvement of staff members is crucial as they
would play a proactive role to implement the change and utilize the
innovative system in the healthcare domain. The proper collaboration
with practice leaders would also be crucial so that they would be
prepared to pilot the process changes and make necessary cages as
per requirements (National Learning Consortium, 2013, p .10). While
working on the information governance initiatives, some of the main
stakeholders that should be involved in collaboration include
compliance or security expert, operational staff member, and the
user of data i.e., healthcare users.
