Review of Case Study 2
What are the strengths of the current organization in regard to the implementation of a
health information exchange?
The Health Information exchange was developed to make sharing information between
healthcare organizations possible and more efficient. While also improving the quality, safety
and efficiency through the use of electronic Health information exchange (HIE). Memorial
Hospital has a Health Information exchange plan in place both internal and external to exchange
information. Having this technology’s systems within this organization allow the ability to share
patients’ data, which enhances patients’ quality of healthcare that can be provided.
In this case, what are the risks and weaknesses of the implementation of a health
information exchange system?
There are some risk and weakness within the HIEs being to ensure all patient privacy,
security and confidentiality is meet when transferring patients’ information between facilities.
The Nationwide Health information network (NHIN), HIPPA, and other policies that provide
guidelines for securing information that is transferred via protocols, standards and specifications
must be followed by the board this is to ensure the privacy, security and confidentiality of
information transmitted between the departments is significant risk involved in the
implementation of HIE systems. The hospitals in the network (MHAN) can also reduce the
potential of duplicate data storage by utilizing the master patient index (MPI), which makes sure
that patients are only listed once across all hospital data systems.
What security considerations need to be made to ensure patient information is secure?
What information should not be exchanged?
Review of Case Study 3
Healthcare facilities have been required by standards and guidelines put in place by HIPPA to
ensure the safety of patient’s information there are many security measures in place. Such as
antivirus, data recovery systems, and spyware protection. Patients are required to sign consent
before any information can be shared. Set guidelines and standards are in place to ensure the
confidentiality and security of the patient’s information. Within these guidelines of the patient’s
healthcare record which includes but it’s not limited to all diagnose, test results, treatments. This
information shouldn’t be released unless patients have signed forms to release information.
Make recommendations on how patient information can be kept secure in a health
information system.
There are several measures I would recommend, the first and probably the most important is
employee training. Providing comprehensive training to employees so they understand the
guidelines and standards required to protect patient data. Understanding access controls and
authentication requirements in order to access patients’ information is a critical security measure
that helps to ensure patients information is adequately protected.
