A healthcare facility can promote interoperability by continually to
research how to adopt and implement technology to improve patient
outcomes. For instance, as part of the Medicaid Promoting
Interoperability Program, an organization needs to stay in compliance
by engaging in the bidirectional exchange of immunizations. This isn't
always an easy requirement to fulfil, since technology is always
upgrading and the need for complete compliance cannot be met
when you’re upgrading the EHR system. For instance, there are 3
stages to be in compliance with bidirectional reporting that had to be
met over the 7-year program. As this is the final year for attestation,
we had to meet this by being in active engagement and transmitting
immunization data to and from the states. This is extremely helpful,
especially when patients are unable to remember what immunization
they were given as well as the date. This has also become extremely
important since covid vaccination has arrived. We are set up for
covid registries, and are able to participate in data exchange for the
CDC.
