Google LLC is the most popular search engine company, but how do employees feel
about being part of this organization? In the article “Organizational Behavior at Google —
Culture of Success and Happiness,” the author says that Google is the epitome of organizational
behavior- the study of the ways people can help a business effectively have optimized
operations. This popular company encourages trust and flexibility by allowing employees to
work where and how they want, such as in the cafe vs. at a desk. Their strict Code of Ethics
encourages respect, accountability, and demonstrates the expectation of employees to follow
Google’s ethical standards. Alternatively, Google also discourages several behaviors through
their Code of Ethics. They prohibit harassment, discrimination, bullying, and the sharing of
private information.
I believe that Google uses a mix of both ego and eco approaches. For instance, the
founders of the company make a lot of the major decisions that make the company what they are.
This resembles concentrated control from the leaders, which is an ego approach. However,
Google does offer few opportunities for team members to collaborate with a sense of unity. They
also show their eco leadership by offering what the company calls “20% time allocation.” This
policy encourages staff to use 20% of their time on personal projects with the hope that it will
influence learning, community, and projects. In the article, it mentions that the idea of Gmail and
Google News came from the time allotted during the 20% timeframe given. Reducing the stress
of deadlines and demanding orders has allowed the company to grow and lower the ego
leadership, while raising the eco approach. Google encourages innovation through continuing
education and development, as well as, making sure to strive to improve their search engine
based on opinions of Google users. This has strongly promoted the growth and likelihood of
long-term existence.
